How much can a civil servant earn?

A recent report revealing that dozens of young civil servants – possibly still in their 20s or 30s – have billions of rupiah in their bank accounts has shown that the bureaucratic reforms campaigned for by the government have yet to show a positive result.

The Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) reported recently that it had found more than a dozen low-ranking civil servants with implausibly large bank accounts, ranging from millions to hundreds of billions of rupiah.

The government has raised the basic salary of civil servants by 10 to 15 percent this year. The rises were stipulated in Government Regulation No. 11/2011 on Civil Servant Salaries.

According to the regulation, low-ranking officials, holding ranks of III a, III b and III c earn basic salaries of Rp 1,902,300 (US$211.15) to Rp 3,197,600. Officials also get monthly allowances, depending on the institution.

Junior officials' basic salaries based on tenure and rank:

Rank III a, with tenure of  >1 year         Rp1.902.300
Rank III a, with tenure of 10 years        Rp2.180.300
Rank III a, with tenure of 20 years        Rp2.499.000
Rank III a, with tenure of 32 years        Rp2.943.400

Rank III b, with tenure of >1 year          Rp1.982.800
Rank III b, with tenure of 10 years       Rp2.275.500
Rank III b, with tenure of 20 years       Rp2.604.700
Rank III b, with tenure of 32 years       Rp3.197.600
